Finally, Twitter introduced new labels for government officials accounts and tweets tied to government or “state-affiliated media.”
Twitter aims to provide an unmatched way to connect people with government or public officials and directly speaks with each other, The twitter explains all these new changes in their blog.
However, Twitter suggesting these labels are part of larger efforts to protect public privacy and rights.
Twitter will add new labels to the following two categories of twitter accounts
- Government officials key accounts, including foreign ministers, news entities, ambassadors, official spokespersons, and key diplomatic leaders.
- State-Affiliated media news companies and their senior and editor staff
Twitter especially adding those accounts where the state or government influence is high through financial or editorial resources to provide or promote specific political agenda. But any media outlet having independence editorial and state-financed will not be labeled like BBC, NPR.
How Twitter will define government accounts for these new labels?
As twitter blog explains that twitter will focus on senior officials and new agencies which provide the voice of the nation or state voice abroad. Currently, twitter focusing on five permanent members of the UN Security Council:
- The United Kingdom
- France
- China
- The Russian Federation
- The United States.
Twitter labels state-affiliated media for government officials accounts
Twitter will notify each account that’s labeled and if the account/users believe twitter has made a mistake, they can reach out directly. Twitter planning to expand this approach to other countries and look forward to updates new features and updates.
Twitter also explained that these accounts now will not be able to receive a promotion or sponsored services through twitter home timeline, search panels, or through notifications.
Facebook also introduced a similar label in June. Facebook announced its ongoing plan of “Election Integrity Efforts”
